Indian chameleon?

shad925 Nov 07, 2003 01:28 PM

How hard is it to obtain (and how much are they worth?) to get an Indian something chameoleon? They had one in my lab the other day, had to get special permits from India to collect...They killed it to take out its liver and use its mitochondrial DNA to find out how the plates of the earth came together in that area (using all sorts of chameleons). Anyone know?

Not sure what kind of research was being done but it sounds more like a ritual.... lol.

Anyway, if indeed you saw an indian chameleon it was Chamaeleo zeylanicus. It is the only chameleon known from that area (India) and it is closely related to C. chamaeleon and C. calyptratus. The only picture I have seen of one was in the book by Petr Necas. It is hard, if not impossible, to obtain as India doesn't export them so I can't help you with info about pricing or availability.

You mentioned that a special permit was needed so maybe this will be the case for obtaining live ones for pets but it is up to the Indian authorities to issue such permits.

Best regards,
Ivan
