Old Shed stuck on hatclings head... How can I SAFELY remove it?

Chrysemys Nov 07, 2003 02:29 PM

Hey,
Two of my recent hatchlings just shed for their second time. They shedded everything fine but their heads. It is stuck. I tried soaking them but I cant really soak their heads. I am afraid to just rip it off. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Chris D.

Hey!

Are you positve that the skin is stuck on them? When did they start shedding? Well anyway.. A good way would be to take warm cloth, put your finger in it and lightly set it on their heads. Then, once it's a little softer, take a pair of tweezers and carefully do what you can to get it off.

Just ripping the shed off is a bad idea, it would be very uncomfortable for the leo, and it usually doesn’t get all of the offending shed off.

Try using a q-tip with dipped in water to moisten the left over-shed. Once it is really damp, try rubbing front to back, with the same q-tip and it should come off. If that didn’t work, try this. Give you little ones a break; they will probably hate you and the q-tip by now, so give them an hour or so to settle down. Spray their humid hide extra well, and let them chill out there. Then get a clean q-tip, and put a small amount of Neosporin on it. Dab the Neosporin on the stuck shed, and wait for 15-30 min. Then try rubbing it off again.

To keep this from happening in the future, make sure that you mist your hatchlings humid hide daily. This usually works, but nothing is foolproof. If you have any more questions, or if anything is unclear, let us know.
