Just adopted an abused alligator

crocodil Nov 07, 2003 05:40 PM

Just got in an alligator that's 5 yrs old and only 2' long. I'm in Oregon and it has lived outside all it's life. The feeding is what's unbelievable. They fed it an occasional mouse but it's primary diet was "garter snakes". Goes to show the amazing survival constitutional of these guys. Poor thing is skin and bones but we'll get the little tyke warmed up and start him on a regular feeding schedule.

Everyone needs a "friend" once in a while. I'm glad for this little guy that you're there for him.

How did you come across it?

We're a rescue place so this guy out of the blue called up and had to get rid of this alligator "right now" as he put it.
We've got him warmed up and in with the other gators his size. Tried feeding him but he's not ready yet.

That stunted obviously it will never be another "Godzilla"?)
It is amazing I received one this summer over 2 years old and about 2 feet long.
The owner said she fed it 6 goldfish every week. (Whether it needed it or not).
Whats amazing to me is that it does'nt seem to be growing that much even with me. It eats like crazy but does'nt seem to put on any mass. It does seem to be much healthier.
A testament to the surviveability of the species. D.C.
