is it a good idea to mix species in the same tank
It depends on what species do you intend to mix. Certain species can be mixed such as Flat-tails, Deserts, Short-horns and Pygmys as long as a thermal gradient is provided. The different species you intend to mix must have similar humidity and nightly and winter temperature requirements. All HLs have a preferred body temperature in the 90's so day temperatures wouldn't be a problem. But a tropical species(asio and taurus) which require constant yearly temperatures and distinct wet and dry periods shouldn't be kept with any of the northern species. I can give more details if you give me the species you intend to mix.
i was thinking of desert hl and short hl or a coastal hl or a texas hl or a round tail hl. how many species and how many hl can i put in a twenty. also can i have coastal and the texas if i live in wisconsin
Most of the species you are talking about are illegal in the pet trade and are protected species. The only legal ones are the Desert Horned Lizard, the Shorthorned Lizard from Nevada, and the Roundtail Horned Lizard from Texas. That is it. Wisconsin is not a good place for horned lizard resources (food items, etc). Try animals that are more "user friendly." Lester G. Milroy III
