CDubbs Nov 07, 2003 06:35 PM

hello i have a 10inch bearded dragon and he will be in a tank about 48inches long like 30inches high and wide..i was wondering if there is any other type of reptile i can put in with him. If not than could i get another dragon? What size dragon should i get? Should i make sure both are opposite sex?

You should never mix reptile species.
The only beardeds that can live together are 2 females, and that doesn't always work.
Problems to look for would be fighting, dominance, stress..
Any new reptile should be quarantined for 3 mo. and 3 clean fecals to make sure you aren't introducing any diseases or parasites.

so i cant get another bearded dragon to go with mine? I see pics all the time of more than one dragon in a tank. A male and a female wont go together? I saw a male and female in a tank at the store for months together.

I've seen it done too but... your first question should be what are you going to do with ALL those eggs? They'd be breeding constantly. One reptile in a cage can be just as fun as two!

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

its less of an issue as babies, maybe thats what youre seeing. but even then you have to keep a very close eye on em and be prepared to separate them with no notice. and unfortunately, stores dont always know or care what the best thing for the animal is.

Here's the deal.
After 6 months old (sometimes before), a male and female will have to be separated or they will breed much too young. Keeping them together as a adults can cause too many babies and a worn out, sickly female. Breeders normally only put them together to breed, then separate again.

Two males will fight, no doubt.

Two females is a possibility, but one may be overly dominant. Leaving the other with less food and more stress.
