So where does this fit in the Hypo range...

DMexotics Nov 07, 2003 08:32 PM

or does it. I have a bunch of hypo siblings of all different appearances. I am confused on this one, it has black towards the tail leading me to believe it is not hypo. What is throwing me off is that there seems to be no black on the majority of the body from about the vent forward, even on the sides. Anybody care to enlighten me on this one? He is in blue now so pics won't help for about a week or so when he sheds. I am not looking for some bizarre new marketing strategy, it is more likely I am staring at these guys too much and losing my mind, LOL.

It is a very nice "normal" sibling. But, I would not sell it as a hypo.

and would never pass it off as one. I do find it strange that there is not more black pigment to be found forward of the vent, however.

>>I guess I miss read it.
>>
>>>>how is it any riskier than selling them?
>>It's not really. But, the same outcome can be gained. I guess that's why I'm a little stumped. (which really doesn't matter. They're not my snakes) If you paid a good amount of money for some snakes.....Why not go thru the same "screening" process for people who would buy them?
>>
>>>>do you investigate the background of everyone you sell a snake to?
>>I personally do. I know just everyone I have sold a snake to. Will I always be able to do that. No.
>>
>>>>does anyone?
>>I do personally know of other breeders who will not sell to a person if they get a bad "vibe" from them.
>>
>>>>how do you know you arent selling it off to an early grave?
>>You never really will. Once it is out of your house you have little control over it. That is the worst part about selling animals. But, you can't keep them all sad to say.
>>
>>>>if you knew would you still sell it?
>>Of course not. Those who know me would know that.
>>
>>>>
>>>>hes looking for someone serious about BCC to do what it is they already do and are proficient at. the only difference here is he isnt asking for money, he inst asking for anything other than to know they go to an excellent keeper whos willing to keep him in the loop on the animals progress. something a seller who cares even the slightest bit about his animals should do to a small extent anyways.
>>
>>I think that is fair. I would want to do the same. I always like to hear about the animals I have sold.

I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT HYPOS BUT CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG. THE PHRASE "HYPO" MEANS LACK OF BLACK PIGMENT. THAT ANIMAL DEFINITELY HAS A LACK OF BLACK PIGMENT; THEREFORE, HOW COULD YOU NOT CALL IT A HYPO? PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME IF I AM WRONG. LIKE I SAID IN THE OPENING SENTENCE, I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT HYPOS.

bahreptiles Nov 08, 2003 11:28 PM

hypo means by definition...reduced black.???some have a greater reduction than others some are just good looking columbians or whatever the locality. by todays standards most of the "snake" people recognize that the classic hypos have patterned bowtie saddles AND the reduction of black in the tail as well. there are some boas that have reduced black, but are not hypos by the and i use the term lightly "more experianced"hobbiests. i have two that by definition are hypos.....but they are more pastels. they dont exhibit the hypo bowties or tail but do have reduced black. i think most of us know what a hypo is. i dont want to make anyone mad but this is the way i see it. any opinions on the subject?

Hypomelanism simply is the reduction of melanin pigment. Any boa that has a below average amount of melanin could be called Hypomelanistic. There are several forms of boas that could be called hypomelanistic like orange tails, salmons, super salmon, pastels and Hog islands. However, since the orange tail and salmon gene effects both pigment AND pattern I don't think they should be referred to as simply hypos...they should be called what they are...orange tails and salmons.
