Calcium questions

kavanaugh_j Nov 07, 2003 08:46 PM

When you guys talk of coating the food/placing the dish of calcium in the tank...what type of calcium? Is it specifically bought at a pet store or is there other places to get it? Obviously you can probably tell the pet store where i live is quite [bleep]ty, and im not sure of what supplies they have and i live a long distance from any reputable pet stores. Thanks

Well, the calcium powder I use is Flukers repta-calcium. It's a calcium powder enriched with vitamin D3. Reptiles need vitamin D to be able to absorb the calcium that they injest. While hunting for hides and other supplies because well.. I'm surrounded by crappy pet stores too, I came upon a website called petguys.com. Check around there, though it would be kind of a waste to just buy one canister with the shipping costs and all.

the calcium i use is RepCal with vitamin D3 which can be purchased at many pet stores, including Petsmart & PetCo. If you have any reptile specialty stores around your area, they should sell them there too. IF you still can't find them on stores, you can order them online

Then just pour some in a dish (i use a cleaned gatorade bottle cap) and leave it near your food or water dish. To coat your feeders, either place them in a bag and shake them up with the calcium inside or, do what i do - and that's just to put some calcium in the food dish, plop some feeders in it, cover it with your hand and just swirl it really fast in your hand hehe~ don't forget to coat your feeders with supplements, i personally like to use Repitive. So not only do they get calcium, they get the essential vitamins they need.

From what i've read, D3 can build up to toxic levels in leos. Mainly because they are nocturnal animals. Why does this matter? D3 is produced when we are exposed to sunlight. So, if you use a calcium suppliment that has D3 in it all the time, you may be doing more harm then good. I use Jurassical calcium, it's pure calcium. Then once a week or so I use Leopard Gecko Dust from T-Rex as the vitamin dust. Included in this dust is D3. I do it this way so that Jak still gets some D3, but isn't ODing on it. This may be a little excessive as far as worrying, but I'm like that. Perfectionist at heart, nothing can go wrong. Just who I am =)
