Death from an enema?

skittles15 Nov 07, 2003 08:47 PM

Just last week, I took my beardie to see a vet because of a possible impaction and he was chewing on his rock, which i hear could be from a yeast infection. Because my beardie, Fred, hadn't gone to the bathroom in a few days (though he has been, it's not as though he was not going at all), the doctor gave him an enema.
The doctor checked for impaction had said that my Fred was healthy and there was no sign of impaction, that his chewing could be because he was bored (HA), and he hadn't gone to the bathroom because he was waiting.

Well two days later my Fred died.

So, because obviously the vet is a quack, I'm not exactly sure why my beardie died. I'm still considering the though of impaction, because i KNEW, i just had a feeling, that he was sick. But is it possible to die from an enema?

I could really use anyones advice right about now.

Thank you!!

Sadly....Yes.
Several months ago, one of the frequent posters here lost her beloved baby this way. Necropsy showed a perforated colon, perforated by the enema device. It was heartwrenching, she took him in to get better & the "help" ended up costing him his life.
I am so very sorry

and yes, it is very easy to preforate the instestines in a small animals which is why it an enema should never be used unless the animal is in jeporady of dying from an impaction, laxatives, oils and stool softners are the first option to use.

Although it will not bring Fred back, you might want to have another vet check if this was the case and speak to the vet that did the first procedure with what you find out.

Again, so sorry about Fred, he was a great dragon!

That just makes no sense that the vet said he wasn't impacted, and proceeded to do an enema. Sounds like a necropsy by another vet might be in order.

Hi
sorry to hear
i know if they chew on rocks they need ofthend minerals .
i always spread cuttlefish bone around my cage on rocks and even on the salad i put it once a while.
if they want minerals they not go chew on rocks r they not go look for white colord partikels in the sandnope they go for the cuttlefish bone then.
i scrape it in tiny flakes and they love it allot .
much strenght these days losing a beardie is always hard.

I am sorry for your loss. I do think you should find out the cause of death and if it turns out it was because of the enema definitely let the vet know what he caused. Demand the fees he/she charged be refunded as well as paying for you to get another beardie.

Then find out where he/she lives........No, no, no. Stop right there, Rob. Calm down.

Seriously, though, you did what you thought was best and trusted a doctor which is a reasonable thing to do. Hang in there.
