New to darts

kg Nov 07, 2003 11:01 PM

Hi all!
I'm new to Poison Arrow Dart Frogs and am planning to get a couple at the next herp show in my area. I've kept amphibians before, but never anything so tiny! Therefore, I have several questions about the husbandry of these colorful guys

Is a 10 gallon sufficient for 1 or 2?

I'm interested in either D. tinctorius or D auratus, which is "better" for beginners?

Do I have to keep more than one in an enclosure? A friend told me that I should get more than one because they need company... I don't know if this is true since I never heard of any reptile needing a companion.

Can I feed a staple of wingless fruitflies?

How do you dust fruitflies??? (I just can't figure that one out)

Well thanks for any help you may be able to give me. I really hope a dart frog is for me

Ok let me see help you out:

10 gal is fine for a couple of frogs, and aratus is a good starting frog. Alone with Leucs, I started with leucs...

ff's are enough, but something different from time to time is good also. Dusting is as simple as a using 2 cups, with the bottom cut out of one, and then replaces with very fine sewing mesh. Then you can figure it out.

I meant Leucs also are a good starter frog, not that you should put them together, sorry its a little early and I worded that poorly.

I'm a newbie and I started with tincs and azureus. You are gonna be soooo hooked! Half the fun is putting the tank(s) together. I, too, was confused about dusting those itty-bitty fruitflies, but I found me a teensy feather duster and just went after 'em. Just KIDDING! I think a lot of folks, myself included, drop a bunch of the ff into a cup, add the dust, swirl around, and then carefully tap the flies into the tank, leaving the dust in the cup. Kyle's method is much more better. I just haven't gotten over to the fabric store yet.

Best of luck in your new adventure!

I started with leucomelas and they are great they are extremely entertaining, and they have nice colors. I suggest you start out with leucomelas because they arent extremely expensive but they are alot bolder than auratus. As you can see from my list i have tincs, leucs, and auratus, I like them all but I'm glad I started with leucs becuase they are less money than tincs, and they don't require as much food. But you will probably get hooked and eventually get tincs, auratus and all the others.I started dart frogs about a year ago with three leucs and now look at my list. I like them better than other reptiles and amphibians because they are diurnal so you can actually see them during the day, and each one of them has there own personality.A ten gallon is fine for a pair of leucs, but with a 20 gallon high you could have a larger variety of plants, as somebody else said setting up the tank is half the fun
