Little red bugs

bassfshng8 May 30, 2003 05:40 PM

I always see these little iny red bugs, with eight legs. They remind me of mites. I've heard they are baby spiders from a few people. Just curious if they are unsafe, since I let me snakes out in the grass on nice days. Anyone know exactly what these little bugs are? Thanks a lot

Do you see them in your tanks or outside?
They sound like they could be mites, ticks or aphids. Not sure which without a photo.
I would keep my snakes away from them until I was sure what they were.

You didn't say where you live, but to me these sound like chiggers which are mite larva. These annoying pests are very pesky to humans, as anyone living in the midwest can attest. One site I found said they can bite reptiles. I'm attaching a link with more info. I'm not sure what their range is.

If you find them crawling around on cement, brick, ironwork, or wood materials they're probably harmless spidermites. Harmless to you or I, but can be disastrous for evergreens if enough of them accumulate.

We have them a lot here on our sidewalk, I just make a point to squish them. I guess a holdback from my childhood, when I'd try and get the longest red smear I could. =P

Those little red bugs could be baby boxelder bugs. EEEWWWWWW I have a boxelder tree in my back yard (for two more weeks till I move into my new house) but every other year the boxelder bugs swarm! Anyone in the midwest probably knows what they are, ugly little black and red flying bugs, and the babies are little flightless red six-legged pests. and yeah, if you squash em you can write ur name in red If that's what they are, they are pretty much harmless, (except to your trees) but even my bug eating cats wont eat boxelder bugs. I don't know if anything eats them. but spraying plain old soap and water will kill them.
