the cooling have started!

Dan_Binderup Nov 08, 2003 05:38 AM

Hey.
The last week I have gradually lowered my temp. from 79-87F to 65-68F. I provide them with a 4 hours hotspot (87F).
does that sounds like I am going in the right direction?
and another thing. both snakes are being very active the last week. Is it because they are hungry or what?
should I take the snakes out (for an inspection) during the cooling or should I leave them completely alone during cooling?

Best regards
Dan Binderup

The temp sounds good to me, may be a little to low. I cool mine just between 67F - 68F, and what about photoperiod? have you reduced the light during the day. i won't bother my snakes too much during this period but always keep an eye on them any respiratory problem sign and I will take that individual out of the cooling period, just my opinion, I am not an expert

Yes I have reduced the light. as a matter of fact the only light they get is what the room provides.

thanks for the reply.

I cool to 66 to 72 at night, BUT always provide the normal hot spot (85 to 92 degrees) for 8 to 10 hours per day, during the day. The activity you speak of is normal. I assume it is looking for mates. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR MUCUS LOOKING STUFF IN THE MALES WATER DISH. I CALL THEM SPERM SOCKS, THEY LOOK LIKE SNOT, BUT IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY IT IS LIKE A PAIR OF PANTYHOSE THAT SURELY COVERS THE MALES HEMIPENES. I ONLY FIND THEM IN THE BREEDING (COOL) SEASON AND IT IS MY SIGNAL THAT THE MALES ARE READY...
BEST OF LUCK with your breeding season...
