WHAT KIND OF HEATING???

prittykitty257 Nov 08, 2003 08:39 AM

I have a 20 gallon tank with one RES. He's about half the size of my hand. During the summer his tank temperature is just fine. But now that its winter its only 70 degress (air temperature). I need a heater!!! I have seen the under the cage 'pad' heaters, the red bulb heaters, and the ceramic heaters. I was wondering which one is best. I have a basking lamp, but its not enough. Also, I only have a little round fluker's thermometer, the one you stick to the inside of the cage, and i was wondering what thermometer to get to measure the water temperature.

Use a submersible heater, those under tank heating pads won't cut it. They aren't made to heat that much water...those pads are only good for land reptiles. You can also buy a submersible thermometer..they are pretty cheap. But you can keep the other thermometer to moniter the air temp. You may also want to think about upgrading size of tank ...depending on turtles size...because they do keep growing. Have fun.

Greetings,

I'll agree. Don't buy a under tank heating pad. They do not work. Luckily, my local pet store took it back as defective and I purchased a submersible glass type heater. Look for one with a thermostat on it so you can adjust the heat as needed.

I would also suggest getting one a little larger that your tank. If you have a 20 gallon tank get a 30 gallon heater. (Same with a filter, bigger is better.)
