Nesting?

chad98 Nov 08, 2003 10:05 AM

What should I have at the bottom of my female veiled Chameleon's cage for her to build a nest for laying eggs? What kind of dirt or sand is best? And when should I start prepairing a nesting area for her? Thanks

I use playground sand/beachsand. It holds tunnels good. Just keep it moist but not wet..

Hi-

There are many different ways of doing this and just about everyone you talk to will have there own way. There was an EZine article on the subject discussing different ways of making a nesting site. Click HERE to view it. I personally use a an 18 gal rubber maid tub in the bottom of a 2x2x4 outdoor cage and a large pothos plant over the top. The tub is filled with Suppersoil or the equivalent for a 10-12" deep soil bed. The Supper Soil is a pre mix of sand and soil. I fill the tub and pack the soil in good. The females will go right to the bottom and start digging. When finished laying there eggs, they crawl out through the pothos, I remove the eggs and place the female pack into her cage. You will need a nesting site once you see your female becoming more active on the bottom of her cage and food intake stops. The mixture and moisture of the soil is perfect right out of the bag, if you make the soil to wet the female will refuse the soil. Depending on the size of the cage, most likely you will need to remove her from her cage and place her in the nesting site, what ever you choose. Hope this helps!
