Strange Behavior - Help!

ClaudiaDLC May 30, 2003 05:54 PM

I have a two year old slider who is behaving "strange". He is "fanning" his penis ( a large black like-membrane) for very long periods of time and he drags it while he is walking about. He refuses to go into the water and when I put him there he panics and runs out to the top of his trunk. This behavior is rather new. I am concerned, is there something wrong? What is going on with him? Is this normal?

Yesterday I took my turtle to the vet (thank goodness I found a herpetologist). His penis was prolapsed and inflamed and required surgery. So far he seems fine, but the vet will need to see him in two weeks to remove the stiches. If it occurs again he may require more serious surgery.

Thought someone out there may be interested in this information. If your turtle has a prolapsed organ, it is imperative that you keep it moist (the turtle should be partially submerged in a pan with lukewarm water). Seek a vet!
