What cages are the best for a skink. I am about to get one(a baby),and I want to know what works for everyone on the forum.

What type of skink will you be getting? It will depend greatly on this.

I will be getting an Indonegion BTS from Zoo Logital Inports in Fla. It will be a baby.

BTS are great. I'm sure you'll love it! I have my BTS in a 30 gallon breeder tank (same floor space as a 40 gallon, but less height, as BTS aren't big climbers). I have some cork bark & a 1/2 log for him to hide under, a piece of drift wood he likes to climb on, a large water bowl (large enough for him to soak in) & his food dish. The substrate is soft inside/outside carpet (bought from Home Depot for a few bucks & cut to fit), covered w/ paper towels. I've noticed lately that he's hiding under the paper towels, so I might add some of that fluffy recycled paper "litter" for him to bury under.
Anyone have suggestions for other substrate he'd enjoy burying in? I'm allergic to wood chip products, so that won't work for me.

Ooopps my mistake. I'll be getting a New Guenia(sorry about the spelling). That's all I could find available.

Hi Buffysmom,

I found a tank called the Lizard Lounge with plastic vent holes on the sides. It's a 29 gal and since i will be be getting a baby that size will last me a year I was told. The pet shop had lizard litter jungle mix made by ESU. I got a log hide, a plant a rock water bowl big enough for him to soak in. I am going to use paper plates for easy clean up. I also have a 3 way hood for the ZooMed heat lamps and and Repital 5.0 bulb. I think this will be ok for it. I've been reading alot of care sheets and compaired their info, but there is nothing like the experience of people on a forum.

That sounds like a great setup! I don't know about new Guinea skinks, do you have a link to a site about them? Robin

Oopps got it wrong again, maybe? I know the scientific name is tiliqua gigas. I think some times they call them New Guieia(sorry spelling)or Indonesian. I don't know, I'm really new to skinks. But any ways Im sure of the "gigas" part.

Oh OK, that's a Blue tongue. I just had mine out to play for a minute. Your cage sounds great. I'm sure he/she will love it!
