Hosuing RETF Q

chameleoncrow Nov 08, 2003 02:49 PM

Hi, i was wondering if is okay to house one RETF in a 10-gallon long Aquarium instead of 10-gallon tall. I know they prefer the tall aquariums, but curretnly i have one empty 10-gallon long, and looking to use it. thanks

A 10 long isn't really ideal for any treefrog. But, there are many small frogs and toads which it would be great for. Fire-bellied toads would be one and there are countless others. For more suggestions of them, try posting a "What's good for a 10L?" thread on the frog and toad forums. Hope this helps a bit.

An adult RETF needs at least a 20-gallon high, not a 10-gallon. You need to buy a new tank, anyway, but can maybe find something to put into the 10.

The speciality reptile shop I frequent has recently kept a few tree frogs in a 10 g. long turned up on its end. You turn it up on its end then get a rectangular plastic dish (those ziploc disposable ones work good and they are cheap) put substrate in the dish to help with humidity and add a water bowl along with a plant and the inside is livable for awhile if it is not full grown and this is a temporary thing till it gets bigger or funds open up. for the open top just put a lockable screen top with a partial glass cover(again for humidity) and cover the bottom part of the exposed screen with clear packing tape to keep the pinhead crickets in. It is a really workable setup for a temporary growing RETF. The shop owner is also a breeder and knows his stuff so I feel comfortable with his ideas. Hope this helps. Jen =)
