Update on widowed redfoot

hannibal Nov 08, 2003 03:01 PM

Thanks for all the input about the sudden death of my female redfoot. Much to my surprise, the male is a whole new guy without her. Neither were particularly social although it appeared that he was more outgoing than she was. Now, he is out and about in his enclosure, cruising all over the place. He comes up to me, for the first time ever and lets me scratch his head. He is eating great and seems to enjoy being single! While I still feel terrible, I don't think he does! Thanks again.

Are you sure the other tortoise was a female?
I have had tortoises kill an opposing male.

The female was about 8" long and did not have the concavity underneath like the male. I assumed it was a she, and they were sold as a pair but I guess I am not sure. If he did kill her, wouldn't there be some obvious wounds on the other one? I didn't see anything like that and I checked her over pretty closely. By the way, what's the feeding recommendation on supplementing with Mazuri? I searched the archives but couldn't seem to find an amount/frequency. Sorry, it appears as though everyone is majorly sick of this topic! Thanks!

The only people tired of the topic are the ones who don't use the stuff. I don't mind keeping topic alive because I'm looking for as much input as I can get. I've been using Mazuri Tortoise diet for about 2 or 3 years and I'm still not sure about it. I use it frequently but cautiously.
I try to feed every other day and then I try to feed greens one day and Mazuri the next. I feed as much as they will eat in one sitting.

Do you feed hatchlings every other day, too, or do you wait until they're a certain age and then switch them over?

Your input is always appreciated (not being a smartass there!).

I feed the hatchlings the same as the adults except the hatchlings of special concern. They get fed small meals daily.
