** question about giving pogo his meds **

pogo_the_dragon Nov 08, 2003 05:02 PM

trying to give pogo 0.03 ML of ALBON through a syringe is like hell...I usually can't get all of it out, and sometimes I can't tell if I even have enough. Has anyone every encountered this and if sooo will it be okay to give him a tad more/less cuz I am having a hard time with this....Other than that though he seems fine...he's still eating, and he has another 3 days on the meds so hopefully we'll see!!!

Any chance of putting it in his greens (handfed) and folding it so he doesn't see it?

It's too hard to get 0.03 ML in the syringe!!!! It's like 3 little lines and that's it..I can barely pull back the plunger in the syringe to get the meds in and it's at the 0.03 ML mark. so what I am saying is that I don't know if he's getting it all cuz I can't get it all out!!!!!!!

what you're delivering is .03ml if you've loaded it to that third line.

You'll never get it all out. The stuff that gets left inside is just the material used to push out the fresh stuff that your lucky lizard gets.

What I did was fill it well past the mark, then empty it back out to the level I wanted.

Mine actually LIKED albon. How is yours doing with it?

I don't have to force feed him it! He laps it up willingly...He has 2 more days on it, so we'll see what happens! Thanks for the reply!

For reference - 1 ml equals 100 units of insulin.
If it is legal to buy insulin syringes over-the-counter in your State, then go to your drug store and ask for insulin syringes that hold 30 units of insulin or 1/3 ml.
You are using insulin syringes that hold 100 units or 1 ml.
The barrel is actually much more narrow in the 30 unit size. Therefore it is MUCH easier to measure to 3 units or 0.03 ml. The little lines aren't so little.
This smaller insulin syringe is designed for these smaller doses.

Here in Florida, we have insulin syringes that measure in one-half units. SO, you could even measure to 0.035 ml (for example) by going to 3.5 units on the one-half unit syringe. These were designed for pediatric diabetics but are ideal for dosing small animals as well.
If you are really struggling and cannot get the small syringes where you are, I'd be happy to mail you some

Good Luck!

Hi!

I just wanted to warn you to be careful when you give meds with a syringe. We had a beautiful female die this year from a bacterial lung infection. She had aspirated some albon. I would suggest hiding her dose in a treat or dribbling it down her nose instead of putting the syringe into her mouth and squirting. It's very scary, and very sad, when you hurt your animals while you are trying to help them.

Good Luck!
