Diamondback terrapin is picky

marcusk408 Nov 08, 2003 05:16 PM

Hi. I have a 1" Northern diamondback terrapin. When I feed him TetraFauna ReptoMin he won't eat it. He'll only eat the ReptoTreat Suprema. I believe it has to do with the color of the food. The ReptoMin is green and the ReptoTreat is red. I want him to eat the green ReptoMin because it has calcium in it. I know it's not because of the smell of the two different items I feed him that makes him choose one over the other. How do I know? Because as soon as I drop the green and red sticks in the water, he goes straight for the red one without even looking at the green one. How do I get him to eat the green ReptoMin? Maybe I need to find a red colored turtle food with calcium in it?

Try going with just the green for a couple of days, he'll probably get hungry and eat it. He has you trained to feed him the treats. He should still be very open to new foods at this size especially when hungy. I feed my little DBT in a separate container so I know exactly how much he is eating.

The pellets are okay but try to get some other foods into him
shrimp and clam pieces, cut up fish, tuna bits, crickets, wax worms blackworms/bloodworms
As you vary the diet you can come back to old items that were previously refused and soemtmes they will eat them

Hatchling DBT's usually dont go for prepatred foods right away. I have had 100% success with prawn shrimp and Brine shrimp to get them eating and their appetites growing. After a couple feedings, cut down on the amount of shrimp and add little pieces of the dry food, they will eat the shrimp first and them scarf down the dry stuff. Always works for me.
