flightless houseflies

el_toro Nov 08, 2003 05:17 PM

Hi - I don't have a cham (as is apparent in my sig, I suppose ), but am seeking info about FLIGHTLESS houseflies. Someone on the anole forum suggested Reptile Specialties who are, unfortunately, out of stock. Does anyone here know of another place to get flightless houseflies? I might give up and try the flying kind from Skipio's if I have to, but I'd rather not deal with that!

Thanks for any assistance! And hi to lele and cheshireycat and anyone else on the other forums.

Hi Torey,

I recognize you from the anole forum Interesting that you posted this as I was just going to re-search the forum for the latest house fly thread - except I am thinking of the winged ones - actually for my anole. Still having a hard time getting one to eat and thought I would try them. Why are you looking for flightless? Do you feed them to your anoles? Just curious...

Hey-

I wasn't having luck with searching the forums - of course I was focusing on the flightless sort. I was hoping to *try* feeding them to my anole since she's stubborn with the crickets and won't eat mealies. The only reason I was looking for flightless is convenience. My S.O. already loathes the lizards - the last thing I need is to accidentally turn loose a bunch of flies in the house!!

I would love to have the flightless as well, for the same reasons, but will they stay on/near ground or do they get around as well as the FFF?? My other anoles (the healthy ones)love to pick off anything from the screen, unfortunately, Jaida (unhappy one) is usually beat to it by Jamaica and no-name (I really must name her!!) have you used the filghtless in the past?

I've not used flies at all before. I just thought I'd give them a try, since Leeloo doesn't seem too excited about the crickets. They're such a good size, too.

Lots of places sell flightless flies. Here are a couple:

http://www.americancricketranch.com/ - in the american buffet section

http://www.bigappleherp.com/Reptile_Supplies/Product/Flightless_Fruit_Flies_melanogaster__hydei_species_930250.html

http://www.reptilefood.com/reptilefood/dept.asp?dept_id=100&shpid=HSWPSBHEBT129HJM94B7XCR94A500439

I bought the kit from bigappleherp for $30.00 and havent had to buy flies in months for my baby jackson.

Thank you for the links! I only saw HOUSEflies on the American Cricket Ranch one - they didn't appear to be flightless, though.

Hi raf - we are looking for flightless "house" flies, not fruit flies. I wish they were as readily available as fruit flies

hey, no problem!! I was just doing a google search for these and came across lots of of other boards/forum where folks did the same thing. i think we just automatically think fruit flies since it is what is usually used.

lele

p.s. are Sunday's the day we are allowed to be air-heads??? I know I make a POINT of it! LOL

No worries, Raf! Thanks for the links anyway - they're good ones! I'm thinking of getting a day gecko, so I'm likely going to need the fruit flies eventually.
