Need help-my carpet is laying eggs, again!

beardiedragon Nov 08, 2003 05:57 PM

My 9 foot carpet layed 26 slugs back in the begining of the year. I went to clean her cage tonight after she pooped out a couple of jumbo rats. She seemed to be pushing real hard and had a major bulge down by her vent. She was pushing out a couple of slugs, one shriveled up and the other normal size. Looks like there might still be more. What if anything should I do???

thanks for the help, I am a nervous wreck.

Ok first off I have not sucessfully bred carpets as of yet. That said I'll try to give you what advice I've heard and read over the years.

Just keep her compfortable and warm for a few days. Provide a nesting box (Kittie litter box with vermiculaite coverd by a card board box should work great). Hopefully she'll get rid of the slugs herself. If after 3-4 days she hasn't layed them try closing her in a tub of vermiculite(With proper venitation) over night. If you do this for a couple nights and she still hasn't layed them then you might seriously consider taking her in to your herp vet.

Anyways hope this helps.

thanks. My concearn was that she laid eggs 6 months ago and now still has eggs inside of her. I have heard it does happen sometimes and as long as they all pass before cooling it should be ok.

If you fear that the eggs have been in her that long I would say that you need to take her to the vet. Slugs can cause major health issues if they are left in the snake for too long...On the other note I do not think she could pass food if she was eggbound. I'm not sure about this but one way or another I'd take her to a vet to get a better idea whats going on.
