Housing for a Burmese Python

jugernot Nov 09, 2003 01:23 AM

I would like some help, I would rather build my own housing for my snake. I would be able to learn more about my burmese and its living conditions. I would like to hear any comments on what type of material to use. Also what types of heating to use as well. I have some experience in building a habitat housing I have built one for my igunna that I previously had. I was wondering if I would be able to build a enclosure in the same way. The enclouser I had built was from an old display case the dimensions were 6' by 3' by 4'. I had to rebuild the bottem, I had used 3/4" plywood then applied ceramic tiles to the floor. I had 3 sets of lights for the igunna which was controlled by a timmer, 1 time per set of lights. If anyone can give me any advise in building or constructing the enclosure I would appreciate it.
Thank You.....Jugernot

I also build my own cages. My first three cages I built are all out of 3/8 plywood and 2x4's and are 6'x3'x2'. On the front I cut out two 30"x18" holes and use these as the doors. I got plexiglass cut to fit and secure it with hinges. To lock the doors I use mending plates which are just little metal plates about two inches long with a bolt hole in each end. I mount the mending plate to the edge of the door and only secure it to the side that mounts to the wood. This allows the plate to swing which when it is placed over the glass door it prevents it from opening. I use four mending plates on each door. I recommend waterproofing your wood with a thick waterproofer. This will protect the woodfrom urine and water spills. I personnaly use contact paper on the bottom of the cage but tile or linoleum would work fine. Just something to aid in the process of clean up. For heating I recommend radient heat panels hooked up to a thermostat. Beanfarm and bigapple herps sell reasonably priced heat panels. Lighting I would use flourescent lighting. I am going to install 48" flourescent lights in mine. The problem with using incandescent light for your day light is that it is much harder to control your temps. If you hook your light up to the thermostat then the light will constantly be going on or off or getting brighter and dimmer all day long. I do use a night time incandescent bulb. Hook both lights up to timers so you can run a proper day night cycle. Anyway this is what has worked relatively well for me. Hope this helps, Todd

Thank you for all your comments I appreciate them. I have a Female Burmese python I should have told you that in the begining sorry. I was thinking about makeing the cage 3'x3'x6'. I am hopeing this cage will be suitable for the rest of her life. I was planning to use 3/4" plywood, and then use some kind of heat pannels with a thermostat to control the heat. I will check out the sites that was given to me to find out the prices and types there are. I wasnt sure if I put tile on the floor if that would interfer with the heat pannels. I was also going to use a red reptile bulb, which I am currently useing, to be left on consistant. I would put the day and night lights on a timmer as stated. I had thouht about using a 48" full spectrum light not sure if needed but I thought that it wouldnt hurt. I should have included this information the first time I posted the question. I'm sorry about that guess I got to nervous when I posted the question. If anyone has any further thoughts or comments I would like to hear your suggestions or comments thank again
Thank you.....Jugernot
