can cham's eat TOO much? Bill? Carlton? John? Morgana....

lele May 30, 2003 06:51 PM

...anyone else?

I gave those luscious crix to my leaf chams yesterday and now Marble - temporary name, I think - is huge! Lisa, the smaller female is too and even Bart (Really - these are temp names - I hope!) is looking sort of chunky and he has always been tiny! I just went to check back and Marble is eyeing another! I can't believe she can fit one in her belly!

But seriously...can they over eat? Should I just let them ferret out the remaining ff, which they seem to have no interest in now)? I was going to toss in some mini-mealies that came today -should I wait? I know many animals will only eat eat what they need, but then their are cats...one of mine is a chunk and the other svelte.

thanks,
lele

Lele,

It is surprising how much a leaf cham can eat.
I have some Rhampholeon uluguruensis that can pack 20 termites into their tummies in one sitting..!!!

I sure would let them eat their fill...

Thanks, that's good to know! What about size? I know the rule of thumb "nothing wider than their head" but I also think they would not try ot eat something that they can't handle. (always the pix in the mind's eye of a cham with a huge grasshopper or mantid sticking out of its mouth!)

I got mini-mealies from Grubco but they aren't very mini (at least 1/2" are they OK? I expected 1/4"

thanks!

Lele,

Having no idea just how big your leaf chams are - I cannot say about the mini mealies - but I know that my leaf chams can handle a waxworm that is 1/2"... soft worms are easily masticated - whereas mealies don't bend and mash down quite as readily. I would stick with the "rule" unless it is a soft worm.

Next time you order, let the company know what you are feeding and how important it is to get the size you specify. Most feeder suppliers are eager to fill your order to your needs.

Morgana,

my little leaves are about 3 months old and 1" - 1 1/4" long -tip to tip. I did express to the retailer and I guess am a little discouraged since neither of these (ph crix or mm's) were what I had specified and what they had told me. Their min order was 600 mealies and 500 crix. I may have to call them about these, too. oh well, live and learn!

Wow... you explained and still got the wrong thing. Sometimes I don't understand customer service!!!!!!!

We got very lucky ... we have our breeding facility nextdoor to Sunshine Mealworms. It makes the BEST working relationship. We only have to walk 50 yards to get any feeders we need.... usually I drag my Radio Flyer red wagon. *LOL*

yeah, a bit disappointed considering it was my first (and probably last) order from them So I have 500 crix and if I have them send out more mealies (and have to pay for shipping each time) I will then have 600 mealies as well that I can't do much with!

The intersting thing is that I had also ordered ff kit from Timberline and they charged double for the shipping (than what I'd been quoted) and forgot to include instructions. They were WONDERFUL about it all and very apologetic. I didn't realize thay sold mini's as well or I'd have gotten everything from them. I would much rather have just one source for everything.
