Condensation

Dave Prada Nov 09, 2003 07:45 AM

I recently set up a ten gallon vivarium. Anyone have any tips on how to keep the front glass on the tank from fogging up? I already have some holes in the plexiglass top by the front.

Thanks,
Dave

I use small fans, you can see pictures of one of them on my site below under the imitator tank. You must make sure that it does not drop the humidity too low, which may be very tough with a small 10 gal.

Thanks for the response, I'm definitely concerned about things drying out too much...is the fan you have on your tank blowing air in to the tank, or sucking air out?

Thanks,
Dave

Blows in, but a very very small amount. I normally check the humidity for about a week or so before I add any frogs.

do you just take a computor fan and fuse the wires to a ac adaptor?

Yup, I use an adapter that is 300MA, and has a voltage selector on it.

For a ten gallon, I'd recommend using a magnetic algae remover used for aquariums. Any aquarium store or Petsmart carries them. Its rather silly to go through the trouble of a fan for that small of an enclosure. I use the algae removers on my ten gallons up to my 90 gallon. Easy, under $10 solution, and you don't have to worry about timing the fan, misters, etc. to maintain a stable environment.

Hi David,
This is actually the solution I ended up using and it works pretty well. Now I'm just trying to figure out if I can hot glue a piece of squeegee to the magnet to improve it.

Thanks,
Dave

I use an aquarium scraper consisting of a plastic blade on a long handle that works like a windshield wiper. You can also wrap a piece of paper towel over it for more absorption. I let my tanks fog up a lot other than the daily cleaning of the glass and don't use fans except for small external fans in hot weather for blowing over wet terry cloth towels over the top for cooling. The frogs don't mind the condensation, and it's improved the attitude of the shy blue auratus 100%. This isn't exactly "show-case" if you have your frogs on public display, but you can always do a quick wipe before guests arrive to admire them. In my largest tank, the 135 gallon palludarium, I simply prop the glass hinged lids open on the front about 1 inch during the day. Thinking about it, I treat every set up somewhat differently depending upon the current need and season. I also have more time to fuss around than most people that are still working for a living do, so I don't bother with much automation. (I'm not gloating-- the trade between working for a living and retirement leisure is trading youth for old age.)
