daytona gtp only shed once

biga35 Nov 09, 2003 08:13 AM

Beautiful daytona juvie wamena is eating well and thriving but has only shed once since daytona, and that was probably only a couple of weeks after the show. The shed was perfect and he has eaten once per week without fail. His hydration is good (occasional soaks to insure this) and his humidity is good (he's kept above wet newspaper in a glass cage with plexi covering everything but the areas for the light fixtures (one inc. and one flo.) I believe his food size is good (less than his girth but big enough to show after eating). The albino Queratero I picked up at the same show has shed 4 maybe 5 times. Is this delayed shed a sign that my gtp is not growing at the normal rate? It was bigger than all other neonates when I picked him up (No,it's not a biak). Should I increase his food size? Or is this slow growth rate and infrequent shedding the gtp norm?

I don't think I would worry about it if everything else is normal...I don't know when Daytona was but if he is eating well, the temperature (what are your temps?) and humidity are good and he is acting normally, he will shed when he will need to. I think that the feeding schedule is good...resist the temptation to overfeed him, shed is not directly linked to size or amount of food. Even if he is growing slowly, you will not "stunt" him by feeding him less but you will make it obese by feeding it too much.
Shedding too often can also be a sign of disease (ie mites or other irritating skin disorder) check your other snake for such problem...
