svt-sinister Nov 09, 2003 11:48 AM

In petsmart there is a substrate called Desert Blend. Could i use this for 4 months old ackies?

Besides if you were to buy enough for your ackies just to dig under (maybe 6inches), you would need 15 gallons of it to get that depth in a 55 gallon tank alone. It took several 3 gallon buckets full to get 6-7 inches for my ackie (I add some as I get the chance). If I had a permanent location for his cage Id have much deeper for him.
Anyways monitors dig and live in dirt. Dirt holds moisture, holds a burrow, contains a bacteria that breaks down waste products, doesnt hold excessive moisture, is "dirt cheap" (free), and you can go several places and pic what they will like. Sand does no good for them, does not hold a burrow, and holds no moisture. Sand is quartz rock so no ability to do any of these above.
