Burm STILL wont eat

homeslice Nov 09, 2003 12:27 PM

Tried to feed my burm that was bitten by a rat (read a few posts down for that story) a rabbit. Placed a smaller rabbit in the cage with my burm for about 2 hours and she would not eat it/. Everytime the rabbit would approach the snake she would run away and hide her head under her body or something. Im having a hard time finding someone who sells ducks or quail? What should i do???

I see quail on rodentpro.com thats frozen and everything but they are only like 200 grams a piece. How much quail will she have to eat? Does anyone know a better place to get bigger food for her?

I dont know if I would go to quails or ducks. Mine use to do that with rats. I never did know what heppended but she was real shy. She may not be hungry, give it time And I would try pre killed with tongs. But I have found out that time and patience is the best thing. Mine would hiss at the food and bit it and thats it, and go away from it, she did this for a month. After that I went to pre killed and she nailed it, I tried like every 5-7 days, I now have to warm each one up after I thaw them in a warm water bucket, but she eats like a horse. This way you avoid it getting bit again.

I tried a live rat and i tried a prekilled rat that was actually killed with tongs like you recommended. She runs away really fast once the animal goes near her. She ducks her head underneath a part of her body like an ostrich stickin its head in the sand. I read a post in my other thread about this same issue and he said his snake got bit by a rat and had the exact same problem as me. He said to try a duck. After examining the snake more closely she seems to look thinner than she was before and shes hissing alot more in her cage. A few recommendations were to wait and give it time, but how much time should i wait? Like how long until its really not safe and its time to start panicing?

Also, i know quail is ok to feed her, but are ducks ok as well? Where would someone recommend purchasing fowl like this, like from a web site. I saw that rodentpro.com sold quail and not many other sites do but what would you guys recommend?

Ok Ok, its not going to be a quick fix, no diffrent than if you got bit by your food, you would not want to try it again. Give it time, dont try feeding her every day, or even every otherday, I know it has not eaten for awhile, and offering differnt kinds of food, such as live then pre killed then frozen can be confusing (as I am told). Stick with the pre killed and if she does not eat it you just freeze it for later. Try every 5 - 7 days. You will just stress her out if it is more often than that. But snakes are pretty though when it comes to not eating, they can go awhile, I now that this is not what you want but I dont think ducks and quail are the answer. But you got to to what you got to do

Email me offline at rnhpreston@charter.net. I've got a few suggestions. Also, feeding your snake ducks is no problem, if you can find the ducks. I used very small ducks in the past, and my snakes ate them just fine. In fact, over the years, I've fed my snakes ducks, quail, chickens, and a few other feathered items as well. I've had some very finicky snakes in my years in this hobby. Had an African rock once that would only eat gerbils. No rats, no mice, no chicks, nothing but gerbils. After a while, those things start getting expensive.
