So I have two babies on hold for me...

Sarah99 Nov 09, 2003 12:55 PM

They will be my first. The breeder said they were around 5 months old. We are pretty sure that one is a male but unable to tell yet on the other one.

I have prepared a 20 gallon tank with paper towels for substrate (until the get a little bigger) There is water and plenty of hiding places in the tank. (I have built little rock caves and put a fake plant and some paper towel rolls in there.)

I have light on one end of the tank and a heating pad under the same end...

Can you guys think of anything else I need or should do before I go get them? I am planning on picking them up today or tomorrow.

Thanks all!

You have everything prepared for your new geckos.

Just make sure that the little rock caves that you built for them are sturdy. If your leo was climbing on them or hiding inside and the rocks fell down you can cause serious injury to your geckos. Thats just a safety pointer for you.

Make sure you also provide a calcium dish at all times.

I think your set!

Post pics of them when you get them!

One thing, do you have a thermometer in the tank to measure the temperature on both sides? Some of those heat pads can get pretty hot. You can go into any pet store and buy the kind that sticks right on the glass.

If you are using a reptile UTH, you need to get a thermostat to control the temp. Most reptil UTH's get way too hot (I think someone tested one here at 114°)

If you are using a human heat pad, a good one of those will generally have 3-4 heat settings and that control should be adequate.

Whichever yuou use, make sure there is air space under the heat eement so heat does not beuild up and scorch the surcface it is on or cause potential fire danger.

Good luck!

if one is a male, then you will be in for either fighting or breeding very soon.
Males figure out what they are supposed to do at a pretty young age, and they will breed before the female is big enough to handle egg production.
if they both turn out to be male, you will probably have one dead and another wounded from fighting.

Keeping them separate until sex is for sure would be a good plan.

good luck with them!!
