Need help for odd skin problem

MMommy2mygirls Nov 09, 2003 02:23 PM

I emailed Doug Dix hoping for some help a few weeks ago but he never got back to me. So I am hoping maybe someone here has had this.

My uro's skin on her back is in horrible shape. It is all like sandpaper and cracked in several places. There is no oozing whatsoever just terribly dry. she also has been acting funny and wasn't eating for awhile but now is. It also seems to be painful for her. Have any of you had this happen?? I've had her to the vet many times and we both are stumped. Just never saw this before. Thankfully she is eating on her own again but won't bask, really doesn't move around much at all. Just goes into her hide at night and during the day will just come out and lay onthe sand wherever.

Any help out there???
Renee

Bring her to a reputable reptile vet, hell know what it is. Hell probably give her baytril, and some sort of topical cream, this happend to a friends igguana i treated it for him, the iguana lost all the crackled dead skin. but it grew new tissue over that. If someone can give the link to the reptile vets i forget it off hand i gotta run out so i cant search it.

Hope i helped
Sean

Thanks Sean . The vet did give me some antibiotics before, but it didn't help at all. Didn't get a topical cream tho....did your friend use something over the counter or prescription??

I only have one vet around here and so far she has been a good vet. Just seem to be stumped on this strange condition. This poor fella has been thru alot over the past year! He was rescued from a pet store and was severely neglected and practically starved to death..(thankfully we took the pet store to court and won). Then he was great till earlier this year when a piece of food got stuck in his intestines. He was sick about 4 months with that. Then it started this skin stuff..sigh

Let me know if you can think of what cream to put on him.
Thanks a bunch!

Renee,

Sorry to hear about your little guy =(. Did the vet take a sample to test whether it was bacterial or fungal? There's a definite possibility it is a fungal infection and in that case antibiotics will make it worse (less competition). Hope she gets better!

no..she didn't take a sample. I think I may take her back again for one. At least she is eating again on her own which is GREAT! But also having to do soaks now every day since she seems to keep getting dehydrated and drinks in her soaks. I also put water in her cage so that she can drink from it as well.

Hopefully I can get an answer soon! I was really hoping Doug Dix would have responded to me plea for help
Thanks again
Renee

Renee-

Don't give up on Doug Dix yet - I've been in touch with him about my uro Joe who's not eating. He is apparently flooded with phone calls and email every day and can't keep up. I stopped trying to email and just went straight for the phone. I haven't had trouble reaching him in the evenings after 9 PM PST. His number is on his website. You can also try calling before 7AM PST. He's been very willing to help me when I've needed it, but you have to be persistent in order to get in touch.

Good luck!
