I use it in my Beardies cages, but have carpet in my snake's tank. Since she only poops once every couple weeks I find it is easy enough to handle. The beardies on the other hand need cleaning daily so the shelf liner works great for them. The only other concern I have about using the shelf liner for my snake is she uses the rough texture of the carpet to rub against when shedding.

Sorry I couldn't help much.

I don't think a shelf liner would be thick enough to protect the snakes belly from being too hot. From what I understand it is kind of important to make sure you have a substrate a snake can't get under when using an UTH unless you are using a rheostat, which would allow you to reduce the heat output of the UTH.

Not neccessarily. I use a UTH for my leopard geckos and shelf liner. I use a human heating pad on a medium setting (3-setting pad) for the tank. My indoor/outdoor thermometer records the temperature as 93.something degrees F. Just use some tweaking to get a good setting for temperature.
