Sleepy BD........Any ideas....fecal was done too.

Gecko2525 May 30, 2003 07:41 PM

My BD has been sleeping a lot. I use to wake him up, but the last few days I just let him sleep. He goes under the paper towel and doesn't get up at all. I'm afraid that his food might rot in his stomach. Do you think this could happen. My regular room temps are 75 - 80 F. The basking spot is 100 - 110 F
He weighs 240g and is 18 - 20" STT. He is 9 month old.

I got a fecal done. He is clear, except Coccidia, but I knew that when I got it done. He is being treated now. Though he was sleepy before that.

Should I just let him sleep? When I wake him up he stays up for the rest of the day...except night of course.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? I have also noticed he isn't eating much of his salad, but will take a little bit of live food any time up. Do you think maybe he is depressed? or is it just the Coccidia?

I asked my vet if I should bring him in. She said it wasn't neccessary.

Anyone have his happen?

Thanks

and many other issues. Long term coccidia not only affects their eating it also can cause some serious internal problem like blocking bile ducts that aid in digestion. Also, how are you measuring your temperatures, many temp gauges are not accurate and read way off..... do you also have good uv light on him.

While treating him for coccidia with meds, you also should do support methods with that to help him cope with ridding himself of the coccidia. Hydation, cleanliness and replacing the good bacteria that is destroyed in the gut along with the coccidia are just as vital as the meds.

Below is a link to some support methods to make sure he gets rid of them the first treatment and does not have other problems develope from the treatment.
treating coccidia

Gecko2525 May 31, 2003 12:50 AM

Okay I will do all this.

I use a digital temp reader with probe. It is accurate.

I will change the Full spectrum UV light. It is probably do for a change in a few months, but I'll do it now.

I will give him some Asoduphlous (sp? way off) to gain back some good bacteria. I normally do this after the treatment, but I will do it now.

He has had Coccidia for awhile. I was fighting hookworms before that. He had both of this when I BOUGHT him...and yes the breeder does know. I got rid of the hookworms first because I didn't want to treat them both at the same time. So the Coccidia has been there for a good chunk of time.

I clean his cage frequently.

Thanks for the reading.

Hi
i also got worms a long time
not me me dragon but it not make it les worse
now i have parazap after several time useing panacure and shots ripercol i dicide not to give horse/catle medicine to a reptile.
now am already clean for more then 1 year and i not been to a vet yet in a year .
that with 7 adults is a nice record .
before parazap i whas at the vet every month atleast .
for fecal exams and more medicines .
after one beardie died i whas depresed and that whas the drop that make the bucket full like whe say in dutch.
am dutch btw
i know hookworms have as the name say hooks where they can hold tight inside the dragon.
so when you terminate them they can hold tight and some wil survive .
so after 3-4 mointh the whoile misery starts all over again.
me advice would be give him parazap.com
and give him good bacterias!!!!!!!!!!!
i think if you do that it wil improve.
am curoius but a veterian who say not bring a animal without seeing it i have my doubts !!?!?!??!!??!
you never know whats wrong i think the vet should say ok let her see !!!!
goodluck with the beardie

I do have parazap. I will use that too.

Yes, I was concerned about my vet's comment. I think she just meant that she didn't to examine him.....with the coccidia. She has already seen him before that's why.

Thanks for your help

I read the link. I am pretty much doing most of that. I do feed him in a separate container, but I wasn't throwing out the crickets he didn't get. Which could have been fed to my other reps. Oh man...more fecals to the vets.

Thanks again

I know the feeling, we had a really tough strain of coccidia once from a beardie that came from PetSmart, following that method finally cleared it. I also learned no matter how nice the dragon is, buying from PetSmart was never a good idea.

Many dragons get coccidia, but it seems the PetSmart animals are so overloaded with parasites and worms and very high resistant, probably from improper followup checks after they have been treated.

Good luck with yours

One of mine tested positive. Not sure the source. Thinking it was stress from possible breeding. She is the only one showing signs of it. But I am treating all the dragons as a precaution. Just in case it was from a bad load of crickets or veggies. I don't recycle my crickets. Back to newpaper. What i have been trying to do to counteract kidney issues is to give the beardie the desired amount of albon, then add 2-3 times that amount of pedialyte. After a few doses I will start to use probiotics to help out with the good bacteria. What a joy. But in the end it will be worth it. Rid myself of the coccidia and all dragons will go through a growth spurt.
