Swollen Eye

TheLord Nov 09, 2003 04:53 PM

Hi,
One of my three-toed has one eye that has swollen up. Does anyone know what this is and what I can do? Thanks,
Steve

It could be an injury.
It could be because something is stuck in its eye (dirt, etc.)
It could be from lack of adequate humidity and/or access to water in which to soak.
It could be the result of vitamin A deficiency, due to improper or inadequate diet.
Can you tell us a little bit more about the turtle, and how it is housed and fed?

Hi,
She has an area of about 4' by 4'. A water bowl is provided for soaking. The area is misted every other day. One side is treated wood chips the other side is a outdoor carpet type of astro-turf. I use Rep-Cal multivitamin and Calcium. I did however introduce two new box turtles to her so I was wondering if they could of brought some disease. I have had her for 12 years and this has never happened.
Thanks, Steve

A vet would be the one to verify the presence of any disease.
I take it that this enclosure is indoors. Misting every other day may not be providing enough humidity. You also mentioned treated wood chips: treated with what? Astroturf is not really very good to use as a substrate: some sort of soil type mixture would be better. Are the turtles the same species, and are they showing signs of aggression toward each other? One may have pecked at and injured your turtle.
Sorry to seem abrupt, but I'm all typed out, and kinda tired.
I may be overlooking something, so see if anyone else has any other suggestions, too.
Stephanie
