Northern water snake in the wild feeding

Wes May 30, 2003 07:52 PM

I usually don't post on any of these forums although I'm a frequent visitor. Anyway I'm part of the Pennsylvania Herpetological Atlas that's being conducted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I was out on Thursday looking for herps by a little stream. I heard a rustling in the bushes and I saw this guy dragging the fish up the bank. The snake is about 3 feet long and the fish was between 10-12". I hope these pictures work. Enjoy

Wes

I've had a couple of northern before. I'm from Iowa originally and once saw a 4' snake under a local dame eating a bullhead that had to be 8" long with spines extended and at least 3" in diameter. He worked the thing down though, amazing what they can do! Cool pics by the way, thanks for posting.

Thanks for the pictures and good luck with your project. Is your Atlas going to be available online? I live in Wisconsin and use the Wisconsin Herp Atlas that was developed by the Milwaukee Public Museum quite often. The Iowa Herpetology site is very nice as well.

Very nice ... especially to see such a "private, quiet" moment from the wild. Thanks for sharing it.

Thats a hella of a nice pic.Im not sure that that snake could swallow that fish whole!could It?

Hey Juan,
That snake will shoot the fish down like a three year old eating jello!! In captivity we prefer not to provide "oversize" meals, smaller, more often is inherently safer. However, the snake we're shown has not limited out yet on what he can get down. Close though, but he definitely has room to spare.
