Any Mantella Keepers?

nasr_36 Nov 09, 2003 06:21 PM

Doesnt seem like too much people here are that interested in Mantellas. All i know is Frank, Devin, and David who are breeding them. Its too bad really, because they are getting harder and harder to find, and CB ones are pretty rare now a days.

Anyway, is anyone else here keeping/breeding them? I only keep Baroni, and Aurantiaca but am expanding my collection soon. Im looking for Cowanii and laevigata if anyone knows where to find them, please post! The only places i found that have Cowanii are animals.com, and Aline reptiles.

I would also love to hear from Mantella keepers, how much luck youve had breeding and keeping any species.

Thanks,

M.N

I was sold 2 golden mantella tads, but they aren't goldens! I think they might by hybrids I have some pics of them on my pic site. I enjoy them they eat a whole lot of springtails! If they aren't hybrids I will be looking to sell them soon, I am out of room!

I have had 3 madagscariensis and 3 betsileo for about 4 months now, and they are great, the betsileo's being the more active of the groups. I don't know for sure what sexes I have but I might try a 'dry season' after Christmas and see if I can get the males to start calling.

Hi Mark,

I had been wondering how your two tadpoles were doing. Seems like everything worked out very well. Your froglets look nice and fat. From the pictures in the frognet gallery it looks like you do have golden mantellas. I have over 80 goldens that are between 1 and 5 weeks out of the water right now and most of them look exactly like your two.

Unlike some species of dart frogs, mantella frogs (except laevigata) morph out of the water without their adult coloration. The orange will start to show up 3-6 months after the tadpoles leave the water and they will have their full adult coloration by the time they are a year old. One thing that I have noticed that is kind of interesting is that the froglets will change color depending on what color their surroundings are. The frogs that I've raised on paper towels look like yours, a lighter tan or bronze color. The frogs that have been raised on leaf litter are a dark chocolate brown, almost black. I wonder if this will effect their adult coloration. Good luck with the two frogs,

I agree. A blurry pic, but still look like goldens to me.
