I think I've come along the best substrate. Non-granular, attractive, easy to replace and clean --- it's perfect. I've heard alot of it on the beardie forum so I tried it with my geckos and they do fine on it.
Non-slip shelf liner. (Easy liner, whatever brand you call it... It's plastic shelf liner basically) It comes in a variety of patterns, I have this nice one that the best I can describe it as is bamboo thatch. You can cut it to whatever size you need, and if you cut wrong, the strips overlap very well. It's incredibly cheap, too, and comes in big rolls. It's perfect for heat, as well. I use a human UTH, and my indoor/outdoor thermometer reads the temprature max in the low 90's (92-93F) directly over the heating pad, surface temp.
I'd highly reccomend it.
