Humidity Question

insideoutsider13 Nov 09, 2003 07:49 PM

How can I keep up the humidity for red eyed tree frogs with a screen lid? I was thinking about making a natural looking tank by having waterfall that has its own built in pump in the back for a water supply and i am going to have a lair of gravel on the bottom with bed a beast over that. There will be live pothos vines and live bamboo reeds growing in the vivarium. How can I increase the humidity?

A waterfall system should keep the humidity up if you're daring enough to invest the time and effort. However, I think the more popular approach to maintaining humidity with RETF tanks is to cover half the screen with saran wrap and mist daily.

Use shipping tape to secure a sheet of saran wrap to the lid. It's cheap so you can play with different sized openings.

Water features will increase the humidity, sometimes too much. You may have to install a small computer fan for air circulation.
depending on the size of your waterfall.
Waterfalls can be can be a little tricky. Getting the water to run where you want it can be a challenge but the overall effect is worth it (just my opinion).
Also live moss retains moisture well and seems to keep the humidity elevated. substrate should factor in as well, coca fiber, spagnum, milled peat retains water well and is a good base for live moss

Here is a waterfall that I constructed in my 75 gal viv. I wanted The water to take only one path , down the flat rock path. It chose its own split stream , down pebble side and flat rock work. After hours of battling, The waterfal won. I worked around it

Instead of covering up the top, which would defeat the point of the screen lid (and RETFs need a lot of air circulation), why don't you just regularly mist? Keeping the substrate wet enough and using plants and moss in the viv also help with humidity. You can probably cover part of the top if you use somekind of fan across the opening, but I'll let someone else help you with that.
