Tongue won't go back in!

crankyveileds Nov 09, 2003 08:11 PM

I woke up today to find my female veiled with her tongue dangling out of her mouth! It's Sunday and no vets are open. Please help!

How awful for you.
I know its late in the day, but I hope she hasn't bitten her tongue and damaged it further.

This is a dangerous situation... and only a vet can really help. There really should be emergency vets open somewhere - after all, most any kind of animal can be injured on the weekends.

Here is an article on tongue damage - if you want to read about it:

Hope you can get her to a vet soon.

Thank you for the help but she has now bitten off the sticky part of her tongue. None of the emergency vets I called will see reptiles. Tomorrow I'll most likely just have her euthanized. I can't afford surgery or antibiotics and I feel her quality of life wouldn't be very good. I feel aweful but don't know what else to do. :'(

I am sorry to hear of this development, and empathize with your emotional pain. Sadly, there is not always a clear reason for these freakish injuries. I certainly understand your concern for her quality of life. We have to think of the animal first, and in some cases, euthanasia is simply the best choice. Many pet owners have had to face similar situations.

Take good care,

I'm so sorry to hear about your cham. That is horrible...I do wonder what happens to cause the tongue to not go back in. Sometimes you have to be unselfish and do what is best for the animal...you'll make the right decision for her.

Im so sorry about your cham, but I wanted to know if it was just her tongue or was she sick, sick? If it was just her tongue you might not have to have her euthanized. There could be the possibility of hand feeding or she might surprise you and be able to hunt on her own.
( from personal experience, my veiled never bit off his tongue, but he never uses it at all. Yet he still can chase down crickets and will grab them whenever I dont hand feed him)

Just wanted to give you a little hope. Good luck whatever you do!

She wasn't sick at all. I had to consider her quality of life without her tongue and it was agreed between the vet and I that euthanasia was the best choice. She was put to sleep :'(

I am sure it was a difficult decision to make, but considering her is what was important. I am sorry
