Corn snake... got mad?

ElusiveKimmaby Nov 09, 2003 08:43 PM

I just finally let up on my search for my precious tangerine milk... i'm highly disappointed, but he's probably long gone by now...
anyway, to make up for it, my friends helped me get a beautiful, young snow corn snake. she's absolutely lovely and very healthy, and a couple of the ladies at the pet store all called her their "baby." They all assured me that she's very sweet, just a little energetic if she's been in her cage too long!
I brought her home immediately and put her in the tank that's all set up. It's a 20 gallon, plenty big, with reptile bedding and a water bowl and a half log thingy to hide in and a decorative plant. Of course this is the bare minimum for now, I will add on once I recieve my pay check! Anyway, I was about to get her out a little while ago to take a closer look and noticed something buzzing in the bedding... after a second all the bedding was thrown off and it was her tail. Does she think she's a rattle snake or something, or do all corns do that? Was she saying what I believe was the obvious, which was "Back off or I'll kick your butt"? I'm not sure what to think of it, but it did make me wary and I left her alone.
Please let me know, and any advice on her care is greatly appreciated!

Mostly all corn/rat snakes will "Rattle" their tail if they feel that they are in danger. They are trying to imitate a rattle snake to make you leave them alone. She's probably not used to her new home yet so i'd just give her a couple of days to settle in before handling. Mostly all of my rat and corns will "rattle" their tail every now and then. It's nothing to worry about.

ahhh ok, good then. glad i decided to use some common sense for once and leave her alone! they really did love this one at the pet store, said she's never bitten anyone... i'd hate to be the one to provoke her to tarnish her record!
ohhh she's so perfectly beautiful... now I have to make another life decision...

what to name her?!

Sorry you never found the other snake, you never know though..

This is my snow Ruby.

I got her as a yearling in a pet store as my first snake. She's a doll! lol

I have a few young ones who will rattle their tail once in a while. But when I take them out they are very mellow.

Have fun, let us now when you buy the next one......lol

BEAUTIFUL SNAKE!
I am absolutely in love with mine. If I didn't know any better I'd think she cast a spell over me
She hasn't rattled her tail at me anymore. In fact she's been very very friendly and much more at ease since this morning. My friend came over to pick me up for class and was very excited to meet her, and he was impressed with her good temperament. I LOVE THIS SNAKE! :D I don't think I could be happier!
Yeah, maybe the other will turn up and I'll have two beauties! We can always hope...
I'm still working on a name for this one. I'm almost positive it's a girl. The people at the pet store said she's one, and her tail is rather short. I'm thinking either Aurora or Amalthea... what do you guys think?

Just about all snakes will "rattle" their tails. That has brought me to a screeching halt on more than one occasion out herping in the field. A big black rat snake vibrating its tail in the dry leaves sounds ALOT like a rattler!! LOL

All of my snakes have done this at one time or another. My Cal king does it when he is eating and you walk by his container. Kind of a warning I guess.

My corn does it when I go to pull him out of his cage. He has always done it. I got him from a breeder as a yearling, and he was never handled much. So he has never gotten out of the "habit" of rattling his tail.

Have fun and happy herping.

I couldn't help but notice that huge picture of that adorable snake of yours. What kind specifically is it?

Hotshot Nov 11, 2003 09:05 AM

Thanks! He is a normal corn. Im thinking he was either wild caught or from W/C parents. The guy I got it from only knew that it was a KY locale snake. Didnt even know what county, just that it was a KY locale. Kind of bums me out that I dont know where he came from other than KY! The normal corn is by far my favorite, and I may see if I can find a hatchling/yearling next year here in KY. That way atleast Ill know where it originated. Who knows, maybe Ill luck into a female!! LOL
Good luck and happy herping.

My snow corn rattles at me too, especially when I first got her (which was not too long ago). But since I know corn are harmless and her "bark" or rattle was worse then her bite, I didn't let it intimidate me and picked her up anyways. I've been working with "her" (I don't know yet for sure either) every day sometimes twice a day when she's not digesting a meal handling her and she has calmed down a lot, but over all still a bit more skittish and squirmy then my other three. The more you handle her the less and less she'll rattle at you.

On a side note the two amel girls I just got in are the sweetest calmest snakes which surprised me because I've not had them very long. I've totally fallen in love with corns now, wanting to build a rack and get me an Okeetee, Blizzard, Lavender, Sunglow, amel Bloodred and a few others to add to my collection. Don't know yet if I'll ever breed them yet but I just love the snakes (and may change my mind about breeding them too, depending on what the market here in Colorado can support). My husband has even fallen for them, especially the snow. He's layed up in bed right now because of back surgery (4 level disc fusion) and will have me bring him the snakes so he can play with them. I have some really funny pics of my anery curling himself around his glasses that I'll have to post up here soon.

And are serious about building a rack system, you ought to check out the rest of the rat snakes too!! They all pretty much have the same personalities and are so cool to watch go through their color changes as they mature.

I have

Male KY locale corn snake, '00

Male KY locale black rat snake, '01 (Probably heavy grey rat influence).

Male Albino black rat snake, '02 (Dwight Good stock)

Male Everglades rat snake, '03 (Dwight Good stock)

And a female Yellow rat snake, '03 (Dwight Good stock)

Future plans are a white oaks phase grey rat and maybe a Deckerts rat.

One thing is for sure though, once bitten by the snake bug, it sure is lots of fun!!

Happy herping

Rat snakes are cool, but I think I'm going to stick to corns for now, although you never know what might happen in the future. I like most snakes actually, but have made it a personal rule not to own one in my house that's large enough to make a meal out of my cats (yes I know rat snakes don't get that big). As for the rack...I have to wait until my sister takes my extra set of couches in my front room so I'll have some wall space for the rack. Hell I just need a bigger house is all. With all these animals, I think I could apply for animal shelter status .

And as an added bonus for having snakes...my ex husband is deathly afraid of snakes, won't step foot in my house any more (WOOOOOHOOOOO). He's also scared of my rottie. Which is too funny for a 6'3 275 lbs. cop with a ego so large it's amazing he doesn't trip over it more often.
