feed your monitor whole prey items. Insects, mice, that sort of thing.

Along with the ground turkey thing, and I can tell you this my monitors that ate the canned stuff once a week and the turkey diet grew slower and had smelly runny stools. My latest animal (my ackie)to used the turkey diet did better after eating lobster roaches only and crickets.

I asked a like question earlier, but about cat food. I offered canned cat food several months ago, and it's since become a large part of my monitor's diet, and she's thriving on it. I've cut back recently, adding more bugs and critters since there's no way to be sure it's better for her even though she's been so healthy, but I'm going to repost the nutrition information of the canned diets since it's buried in the thread at this point, with a few edits on my previous commentary.

Zupreem brand monitor diet, off of the Zupreem site, has:

Crude Protein Not less than 10.0%
Crude Fat Not less than 6.0%
Crude Fiber Not greater than 1.0%
Moisture Not greater than 78.0%

Compare to Friskee's Fancy Feast for cats:

Crude Protein Not less than 11.0%
Crude Fat Not less than 4.0%
Crude Fiber Not greater than 1.5%
Moisture Not greater than 78.0%

So the monitor diet has slightly less fiber, and slightly more fat. Also, the only additives that aren't vitamins in the cat food are flavorings, (that are either natural or USDA approved additives, so says the Friskee's site) and guar gum. Guar gum is to bind and hydrate the cat food, and it's a natural product--if you read up on it, it's really benign stuff (though the research tests are on mammals NOT reptiles who metabolize differently.) The main ingredients are the same, except the cat food uses more whole ingredients, fish, and beef broth instead of water. There's more added vitamins, though again, these are added for mammillian needs. But I've been told "pet food will seriously hurt you monitor in the long run, if you're going to go with processed then use monitor food" and I think I trust the monitor food less than cat food, even though I do feed the Zupreem brand to my parrots (I think their foods for birds are better made.) I left out ask on my list, because it wasn't on the monitor diet listing, but don't think that's an additive, ash is what's left over when all organic materials are burned off, it's a representation of inorganics, such as calcium and phosphor.

if you read carefully, where it indicates fat content it says 'not less than' _%.

In other words, it could be much much higher than that, as long as it doesn't drop below that level. For example, since protein must be greater than 11%, the fat content could be 89% if they wanted it to be. Unlikely, sure, but it's also unlikely they are going to try to keep the fat content at its minimum, either.

Sure you want to be feeding this to your monitor?

Not for human consumption, because the manufacturers dont have to worry about being charged for a crime by lieing about whats in it. I dont know whats in it do you? Whats thriving on it? Thriving is growing faster than on rodents, and insects, reproducing younger than 6-8 months of age, and living longer than 30 years old. Mine are comfortable, healthy, happy, and doing great but I dont think anyone can say theirs are actually thriving unless they do all of these things I listed, and it must be on a diet of zupreem only. Im sorry rodents and insects are less expensive and I know whats in them and how nutritious they are.
