Selling of cross bred snakes as pure is getting common on the classifieds......

Ric Blair Nov 10, 2003 12:03 AM

Wow, did you see the albino graybands for sale on the classifieds. They don't even closely resemble an alterna. They look like milk snakes. Boy wood they be a steel if they were pure albino graybands. He states in the add that he got them from Rock-N-Reptiles. If they were sold to him as pure albino graybands then this surely makes the leucistic a suspected cross. Infact I could not buy a snake in good conscience now if it were said to be leucistic. Unless it came from a long term reliable alterna breeder. What are your thoughts? Ric

I agree 100% Ric. It probably had some Ruthvens blood. I wouldn't trust it.

There was a proven female albino blairs x ruthveni & het male sold to Rock-n-Reptiles fresh out of hibernation early this year. I was suspect from the very beginning - haven't heard much about them since that initial post where your name was "plugged".

Maybe albino nelsoni or albino ruthveni mixed with greyband (if any at all).
Definitely not pure alterna. In fact it is my understanding that any "albino greybands" are descended from alterna-albino ruthveni crosses.

Ric:
I agree 100%.....it is pervasive. I will continue to spend my $$ w/ established breeders when purchasing snakes in this time of hybrids and mispresentation for peace of mind.
I can only think about the future of the hobby, i.e. obtaining new blood lines, etc. And imagine if these hybrid producers start releasing what they hatch out into the wild. GREAT right ?...damn SAD and will be devestating. Please save the "hybrids are OK" speech and emails...they will be deleted and left unread.

I don't know about you guys, but the colors on an alterna are spectacular. It is one of natures living pieces of art. Plus the variations that occur are neat too. Why would you want those colors and patterns bleached out to an all white snake? Sure some snakes look a bit better when they are albino/leucistic like Texas rats for example (genarally a plain snake...kind of cool to see a white version), but I say keep alterna beautiful.

My two cents and I'm sure there are many that agree/disagree.
