question about vestigials in ijcp's

schell_19 Nov 10, 2003 03:24 AM

i've had my male ij for about 8-10 months now, at which point he was a little over three feet (roughly 18 months) he was probed when i bought him and he clearly probed as a male. now tem months later he's a little over four feet and approaching his third year. he would probably be ready to breed next year, however i'm currently lacking an appropriate aged female i have and '02 pair as well. my question is as follows, despite the fact that he was probed as a male he is lacking any real evidence of spurs, and since my two other ij's are really to small to notice them even if ther would hold still long enough for me to get a look , i am interested in in how obvious the spurs of carpets are in general, or if i should take this is a sign that he is really a she and it was misprobed when i bought "him/her", if someone has a pic comparing a typical male and female's spurs or provide some explanation to what i'm seeing i would greatly appreciate it.
thanks a lot
rob

Although it is true that some pythons exhibit sexual dimorphism with spurs it is really hard to tell with any accuracy. Female's spurs tend to be smaller, the males larger and more hooked. You best bet is to reprobe it or have someone probe it for you.
