Help with my Ackie

therupert Nov 10, 2003 10:34 AM

I got a 3 month old Red Ackie last Wednesday. Ever since I've put him in his new cage he has been buried in the substrate. I have not seen him out basking or even moving around once(although I did see poop under that basking spot so that would mean at some point he was there). So my question is this...is this normal for an Ackie?

I've never kept one before, but I was under the impression that they weren't this secretive? So I'm a little confused. Here's the cage setup that I have him in:

36" Long x 17" Wide x 24" Tall
8" of Soil/Sand/Vermiculite Substrate
Multiple Hide Spots including a Rete's Stack
Basking spot of 125 - 130 degrees F.
The cool side of the cage runs right around 85 give or take a few degrees.

Anything I should be doing different? Are they always this secretive? Could it be that it's just get acclimated to it's new surroundings? Should I be concerned?

Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions or wisdom on the matter.

It is still young, give it time, it actually sounds very normal. Mine are only out for about an hour or two a day, but they are active for many hours underground.

I wouldn't be concerned.

Thanks Robert. I take comfort in that!
