What best course of action for my dragon ... he's very sluggish.

kosh Nov 10, 2003 11:06 AM

around this time of year last year he did the same thing. hid in his little cave and wouldn't come out to eat, drink, or bath in the warmth of his spotlight. i live in south florida and it's still quite warm so i don't think he's trying to 'hibernate'. last week, after 2 weeks of this behavoir, i took him out, put him in warm water for ~15 minutes and he drank water until his belly was full so i guess he was dehydrated and then he had a large bowel movement. I gave him fresh food after that and placed him under his light. I didn't see him eat but he was a bit more active over the next 2 days following... walking around and warming himself under his light.

now this weekend he's the same again... in his little cave and won't come out. should i repeat my steps from last weekend and maybe this time feed him chicken baby food in a dropper? or just leave him alone? every time i've taken him to the vet in the past he's always been fine. so i'm reluctant to take hime again and be charge $80 just to be told once again "he's just fine - keep up the good work."

he's about 2 years old now.. i've had him since he was 7 weeks old.. and he's acted like this ... about 3 times more in the past. usually taking months before he comes around... but i always do what i did last weekned. I just don't know if it's unecessary to take those steps of if he's better off being left alone.

thanks for any help.

It's probably brumation. The age is right. Your location doesn't really matter. Just offer greens every day, change lights to a 10on/14off schedule (Assuming you're using 12/12 or 14/10). Can't hurt to have a fecal done, however.

I am in Florida also and it is not so much the temps as it is the day cycle and length of the days. Sounds like your typical brumation to me.
