shelf in cage?

lele Nov 10, 2003 01:15 PM

I'd like to put a small corner shelf in Luna's cage to put one of the hibiscus up higher. It is a 48x24x24 screened cage. Has anyone done this? Any suggestion on the best way to attach and be secure enough? I thought of creating something on legs, but would LOVE some input (and photos, too)!

as always, thanks

Lele,

To elevate plants, we use empty flower pots (turned upside down). In the larger cages, we even use 5gal buckets. Yeah, we have some cages 7ft tall... and it saves buying those tall (expensive) trees.

Hope this helps,

Morgana - I did that originally but frankly I didn't like the way it looked LOL! Yours are more functional b/c you have so many, but mine is functional but has to have good aesthetics ha-ha!!
Since this cage is 4' tall the overturned pot only brought the plant up about 8" or so. The scheff is OK it's the hibiscus that are only about 10" off the ground. She went down to one today and ate a flower but I also want to get it closer to the light. I thought of making a stand and putting a low light plant underneath...hmmm

I've also used those coated wire plant stands for more height than a pot. Easy to clean and Pothos can vine on the legs.

ah! I like that idea! You mean the round ones with one of two shelves?

The one I have holds one pot on top. The legs form a tripod and it stands about 36" tall. The rubber coating keeps it from rusting and the pothos vines create a nice little hiding area underneath.

I'll have to begin looking around for "just the right table" for my girl

At TARGET:

they sell a telescoping 3 tiered shelf that extends and holds tension. I think the minimum is 4ft. It is in the bath department.

I'll look for a link. It costs about $10.

sounds interesting. the minimum is 4'????That's as tall as the cage - did you mean max?

Nope, I meant 4'
BUT, I am only guessing. (could be less.. could be more)
I imagine that you could cut down the non-telescoping part and put the boot over top of it. Then you telescope it about 3 inches for a snug fit.

I sill haven't found a link for you.. Target.com didn't have it, but I know they had it in the store.

I have the same size screen cage, i just put a nice shefflera in it, i have a hanging pothos pant, and a ficus tree, right now my cham is prolly overwhelmed by the vegatation now. When i get a camera i will get a pic. But in my cage about12 inches from the top a have a large bendable vine/branch in a spiral type shape going from high to low. i have some sanblasted grapevine in one corner i used zip tiesto secure it to the frame and the screen, be sure to make the holes just big enuff to get the zip ties thru it, crix can find them. I have a jumbo grapevine one the bottom of the cage, and about 6 benda vines running all over the place, now to the plants, The scheff i have on an iron 3 legged stand it holds upto a 12 inch pot, the nice thing about it is the legs enable it to have stuff going under it, the top of the scheff is about 6 inches from the top of the cage,The hanging pothos (4.99@walmart) i put a hook above the cage,be sure it will hold a plant!!!,iran the chain down to the top of the cage to where one half link is stickin thru cage(cut small slit in cage)..i chucked the ugly plastic hanger in favor of a nice woven one.(be sure u can adjust the hieght of it)set it to where the plant was about half way down the cage.the pothos i snice cus u can run branches of it too various other climbing things, and i have the ficus on the very bottom, wow pretty long post, but hope that gives you some ideas. will get pics up soon
