Large alligator snapper feeding.

MikeST Nov 10, 2003 01:35 PM

I 've been going back and forth with a few of my friends from this forum. Trying to figure out feeding for my two bigger snappers.
What water temp do you guys keep?
Mine is 74 right now.Too low?

Almost everyone with the big guys say they eat anything dropped in the tank. John told me that also when I was down there. I've never had that happen.
Sometimes my guys eat, sometimes they don't. If they leave the food, its always a mess the mext day and I have to change out the water.
If I throw in chicken legs, some might be gone or partially ripped up.Sometimes they completely ignore. They've never eaten during the day at all ( normal, i know they are nocturnal )
Anyway, I know most of the people with big snappers have taken off from the forum, but write if you have time. Like I said, John Richards told me these guys will usually eat anything you throw in the tank. Fruit , vegetables, whatever. I just haven't had that happen.

My snapper isn't very big (6" so I don't know if this is much help.

She mostly eats turtle pellets. But during the summer, she is outside all day, and I've seen her eat all kinds of bugs and frogs.

She will try anything once, especially if I hand feed it, but she can be picky about what she will eat a second time.

None of my large or small snappers have a problem eating during the day. My smallest one begs when really ready, but will eat whenever food offered

I'm going to get a female ally snapper, and was debating on whether to use a pond or stock tank. Which one should I use? Where did you get yours from, and how many gallons is it? What's better, a canister filter, or internal? Big Al's Online Line has nice-ass prices on filters.........everything.

Its really just going to depend on the size of the snapper you get. My smaller hatchlings and my mid-size guys (5-6" are in aquariums with smaller outside filters.
I have magnums on the bigger stock tanks. They really can't keep up with an adult aligator snapper, but they take the edge off most of the dirt and clear the water a little bit.
If you get a smaller snapper, it doesn't need a big stock tank for quite a few years.
