which is better spot or flood or does it not make a difference?

It only makes a difference depending on your cage set up.

Since I have enclosed cages with limited ventilation, I use the spot bulb. This way the heat is focused on one area of the cage and the other end is much cooler.

The flood spreads more light across your cage, this works good if your having problems getting sufficient lighting inside the cage.

If you're using mercury vapor bulbs.....use the flood, not the spots. Otherwise as beginner's basic said, depends on your cage and set-up.
