Cypress mulch substrate

RobertPreston Nov 10, 2003 03:02 PM

My snake building is complete, and I am now ready to begin moving my snake into its new cage. I have an insulated 12x12 newly constructed outbuilding behind my house specifically built for snakes. Part of the room is framed and screened, making a 12' long, 4' wide walk-in cage. I had planned on using cypress mulch as a substrate, but I'm kind of reconsidering this. I've always used newspaper, but I was thinking that mulch might be more comfortable (and appropriate) in such a large enclosure. What are the caveats about using cypress mulch? Anything I should know about it beforehand? Any other substrates I should consider?

In case this makes a difference, the floor of the cage without any substrate is linoleum.

I've always thought Cypress Mulch is great. Even greater if you can feed the snakes outside of it (not on mulch). You could also compromise - have a large pan filled with mulch. Regards.
