anyone ever feed their anoles (small) silkworms?

shortydsm Nov 10, 2003 04:13 PM

I ordered silkworms for my leos, beardie & water dragon this week & a few small ones came in with my shipment so I put 1 in my anole tank & my green anole ate it right up & seemed to love it. He ate another one today. My leos won't go near the silkworms but my beardie & water dragon love them. I read they are pretty healthy since they have a soft body & are easy to digest & also stimulate appetite. Just curious if anyone elsse tried silkworms?

I never have, but I understand they're a great food source. The problem I would have is I only have one teeny anole that eats bugs/worms, so can't order silkworms without the vast majority going to waste. They get too big too fast. If I had other, larger insectivores I would definitely go the silkworm route!

Silkworms are the best feeder insects available for insectivorous herps!! They're very nutritional, soft bodied, easy to catch and digest for lizards. I never tried these before, but there's nothing wrong if you feed them to your anoles. In fact, it'll make them healthier than ever. The only negative side of keeping silkworms is that they can grow large, too large for your anoles. And their growth rate is quite rapid. So therefore, hatch a few eggs at a time, and keep feeding off small silkworms before they get big.

I'm always hearing good things about silkworms, so I guess I should get some! I need some soft-boddied insects that are nutritious (unlike waxworms) to feed my frogs and leos, among other things. I think this post just convinced me to do it already :D
