thinking of getting a cham... have some questions

shortydsm Nov 10, 2003 04:25 PM

My boyfriend & I own many lizards (see my signature below) & are thinking of adding another type to our collection. He really wants a chameleon but we don't really know too much about the species. I heard they can be hard to take care of & that the temp & humidity always has to be just right? How long can they live for? Where can I find(trusted) info online? Are they handleable & friendly? What would be a good species to start with? We don't want to breed, just want them for the colors. Thanks!

If your looking for a chameleon for a starter I'd go w/ a panther. Their pretty hardy & the males can be pretty colorfull. They can however be a bit pricey. I've had a couple males that seemed to enjoy being held but for the most part they don't like being looked at let alone held. I've found for the most part in my experience that the males are friendlier then the females but this isn't the rule. If your looking for a trusted source try kammerflage kreations they have great panthers & are always helpfull with questions. Do all the research you can before you buy (I know you heard that before & with the right set up a male panther can live 5 to 8 years.
I have some basic info on my site along w/ some links for you to check out http://chameleons.iguanaman.com I also have a few young panthers for sell.

They do require special housing needs. 99% of them really dont like to be held. Alot of them are not friendly and will open their mouths when you try to pick them up, and sometimes bite. They are more of a look but dont touch pet. They are very rewarding though I love mine soo much. Try charm_paridise's website. I dont know it but he has a link to it on his posts. Its got all good useful information. I would definatly say a male panther would be best for color, they live 5 years too. And like the other guy said they are a bit pricy,$150-300. good luck.

Here are some trusty cham info sites for you to roam around on. Don't start off with a baby. Wait for an older cham as they are less sensitive to acclimate and feed. It will cost more, but will pay off in less worry, less tiny food, and changes in caging. Don't buy one from a pet shop...unless you have a good one who will special order from a breeder at your request. They are often wildcaught, poorly cared for and you will inherit health problems. Spend some time reading on:

www.adcham.com, www.chameleonnews.com, www.geocities.com/ccicenter, and www.calumma.com

Also some good nutritional info on www.herpnutrition.com
