What size mesh does everyone use on their mice setups ? I ask this because 1/4in (6mm) seems way too small for them to feed through but 1/2in (12mm) seems great for feeding but the hoppers squeeze out

When I used plastic boxes I had 1/4in top that had 1/2 troughs to feed from and as long as the trough was kept filled up the hoppers couldnt get out, but now that I'v changed over to a tray / rack system I'm having a few problems of escapee's with the bigger size mesh.

As you can see from the photo I am using both size's of mesh but in the cages with the 1/2 mesh the mice were used earlier so that I had no escapee's. I changed over to trays because this method of keeping mice is not space effective and space is one thing that I lack.

Mice are able to feed thru 1/4'' mesh because when they bite on the food the top of the mouth is in one 1/4" hole and the bottom is in the hole next to it and the piece of wire seperating the two squares is in the mouse's mouth. The mouse nips off a piece of food which usually falls into it's mouth and then eats it.
Before I found this out, I too had always wondered how a mouse could stick it's snout thru the the little 1/4" square and open it to bite on the food.
I hope this helped.
